There are 31 local authorities in Ireland that vary a lot in size and whose population vary from 43,000 to 530,000. The road infrastructure is the largest asset managed by local authorities. It’s efficient management  (both day to day and in the long term) is essential to economic activity as the majority of commuting and haulage occurs using it. The 31 local authorities operate, maintain and improve the network of regional and local roads. Ireland has a very dense public road network all of which is paved but varies a lot in quality and standard. It varies between large highly trafficked urban locations, to rural locations providing access for communities and the agricultural forestry, tourism industries.
